The following are the different species of mosquitoes;
- Anopheles Mosquitoes: These species are usually found in rain, ponds, and streams. They are a potent cause of malaria in humans.
- Culex Mosquitoes: These species are usually found in freshwater habitats such as pools, pools, and ditches.
- Ochlerotatus Mosquitoes: This type of mosquito species is usually found in natural and artificial containers, floodwater pools, and so on. They bite readily outdoors at all hours of the day. It is uncommon for them to enter homes to feed on humans.
NATURAL WAYS TO CONTROL MOSQUITOES AT HOME
- Camphor: This is a waxy, flammable solid with a strong aroma. Camphors are readily available in the markets for sale at an extremely cheap price. A detailed analysis of how it can be used is by putting it in corners where mosquitoes can hide, ensure all doors and windows are closed, and leave for a period of 30 minutes for evenly distribution of odor. By the time you return, the mosquitoes would have been successfully gotten rid of.
- Garlic: Garlic is an herb related to onions. It is commonly used for conditions of the heart and blood system. Garlic also helps to control mosquitoes. Crushing the pods and boiling them. After cooling, sprinkle the water on places you are keen to keep the mosquitoes away. An alternative way of using garlic as a repellent is by rubbing the water of boiled garlic all over your body after it has been cooled.
- Lavender Oil: This oil can be used as an air freshener in homes and can also be used to control mosquitoes when applied to the body. Lavender Oil is available for sale but their flowering plants which are used to manufacture the oil are not readily available in Nigeria.
- Eucalyptus: Just like the Lavender plants, Eucalyptus plants are not readily available in Nigeria too but available in Australia. Mixing Eucalyptus and Lemon oil can serve as a mosquito repellent. Using this mixture does not have any side effects on the skin but it’s recommendable to use the same proportion of both substances during the production process.
- Dry Ice: Surprisingly, this method can help in controlling mosquitoes. The process involves getting dry ice and put it in a container. The ice will emit carbon dioxide and since mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide they get trapped in the container and die.
ARTIFICIAL WAYS TO CONTROL MOSQUITOES AT HOME
- Mosquito nets: A mosquito net is a meshed curtain that is circumventing draped over a sleeping area to prevent against bites from mosquitoes and other insects. Asides from protecting you from mosquitoes, pre-treated ones are capable of also killing the insects whenever they land on the nets. Although, the pre-treated nets should be spread outside for 10 hours or more. Mosquito nets are relatively cheap in the market.
- Insecticides: Insecticide killers are chemicals used in controlling mosquitoes in your home. The cons of insecticide killers are that some of the chemicals are made from banned chemicals like DDT which is dangerous to health especially if inhaled too much. Examples of the commonly used ones are Mobil, Raid, Baygon, etc. Recently, sniper is now commonly used due to their effectiveness but it is advisable to leave the room after it had been used.
- Electromagnetic mosquito repellent: This device keeps insect pests and rodents like rats away from your home. It works by creating ultrasonic sounds waves to control mosquitoes and other insect pests from your home. It is odorless and does not emit harmful chemicals. Price is relatively cheap as well.
- Electric mosquito bat-swatter: This device uses electric shock to kill insects. The mesh is electrically charged to a voltage of about 1500 volts. With the continuous pressing of the button, when the mosquito or a fly comes across the mesh of the swatter, the continuous current of the device roast the mosquito.
